Although laser weapons aren't a reality as yet, it is quite possible that they become a part of combat ammunition in the future. With this pertaining threat in mind, US Air Force is asking researchers to come up with ways to find "retrofittable laser protection for weapons." Apparently in tests conducted with the U.S. and Israeli ray guns have managed to bore holes and all kinds of munitions on targets. There is a need for "High Energy Laser (HEL)-shielding technology that can be applied to vulnerable airframe components and internal guidance electronics of air-delivered bombs and missiles." To laser-proof its bombs and missiles, the Air Force may have to opt for a thermal protection coating that is a spray-on or a broadband reflector embedded layer on the munition's skin."
Future use of the spray-on laser defense could include protecting "commercial airliners against worldwide terrorism and proliferation of ground-based laser weapon threats."
