Mininova Kills Illegal Torrents, Goes Legit

And another one bites the dust...

Just like The Pirate Bay and the likes of Suprnova, Kazaa, Napster and many, many more another of the world's leading peer-to-peer file sharing sites has gone legit. In a formal blog post Mininova declared:

"Today is an important day in the history of Mininova. From now on, we are limiting Mininova.org to our Content Distribution service. By doing so, we comply with the ruling of the Court of Utrecht of last August. Unfortunately the court ruling leaves us no other option than to take our platform offline, except for the Content Distribution service."

Mininova said it had been working on filtering systems for the last couple of months, but found them not to be 100 per cent reliable. Consequently "the only option is to limit Mininova to Content Distribution torrents from now on" though it did admit to be "considering an appeal at this moment".

Mininova launched in 2007 giving it a rather shorter shelf life than many of the other large torrent tracker sites, but a number of high profile causalities saw its status skyrocket - as did its profile on the radar of the recording industries. It will be interesting to see whether Mininova tries to do-a-Napster, though I suspect its name isn't sufficiently established.

So another file sharing site goes down. Expect 10 more to take its place by the end of the week...
