BlackBerry suffers as networks laud Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS

RIM S.O.S

2009 has been a slow year so far for BlackBerry. After the success of the Bold in 2008, the Storm was soaked in failure and the Curve nearly sent them round the bend. Aside from the launch of its App World store, it's been all quiet on the Western (Canadian) front.

Now, reseach in the US claims that RIM's nose is being further pushed out of joint by the American networks' love affair with the Palm Pre and Apple iPhone 3GS smartphones that are cutting into BlackBerry's once iron-clad grip on the market.

The report from by Piper Jaffrey says that networks like AT&T and Sprint have been pushing the luxurious Apple and Palm handsets rather than the likes of the BlackBerry Bold, which has led to a shortcoming in June sales for RIM. The end of a buy-one-get-one-free offer on BlackBerry phones with the Verizon network also hit new sales.

So it seems RIM will need the BlackBerry Tour, set for a UK release later this year, to pick up some serious steam if it's to crash the Palm Pre's battle with the iPhone 3GS for the coveted Christmas No.1 spot.
