Activision DJ Hero preview

If measured purely on the ‘hours of life wasted’ scale, Activision’s Guitar Hero World Tour was a clear winner of Stuff’s favourite game of 2008.

Clearly recognising that festival dance tents are as popular as the main stage, the US company has now crafted a version of the series for those who prefer spinning vinyl to shredding the fretboard.

Hit the decks
The final track listing for DJ Hero is, at the time of writing, still a mystery, but plenty of other details of how Guitar Hero’s simple but addictive gameplay will translate to the decks have emerged.

The decks themselves will have three buttons, each representing one note. This might seem like small beans compared to Guitar Hero’s five coloured buttons, but there are plenty more controls to fiddle with.

To win over the crowd, you’ll also need to adjust the crossfader at the correct moments and indulge in some scratching to rival Grandmaster Flash.

Euphoric moment
If that’s not taxing enough, there'll also be an effects dial, a rewind setting to loop back and replay sections of the songs and a version of Guitar Hero's 'star power' called 'euphoria'.

To whet your appetite, some of the track listing has been revealed by US mag Game Informer. So far, it includes mash-ups like Gorillaz’ Feel Good Inc. versus Marvin Gaye’s I Heard It Through The Grapevine and Nirvana’s All Apologies versus Rick James’ Give It To Me Baby, as well as unconfirmed tracks from Beastie Boys, Beck, Blondie and Billy Squire.

For an extended list of the tracks, check out our DJ Hero blog. Activision has promised at least 70 tracks in the final version – we’ll bring you more details and a hands-on video as soon as we get it later in 2009.
