Samsung officially launches the i7500 Android phone

O2-bound touchscreen packed with Google goodness

We've been saying that 2009 will be the year of Android for some time now, but so far, we've been left just a little short-changed by the mobile makers. Aside from the Vodafone-bound HTC Magic obviously. So it's with great anticipation and a sense of relief that we greet the Samsung i7500 Android phone.

It's already been confirmed as an O2 exclusive in Germany. Will it be the same in the UK? There's every chance that will be the case, but we're still awaiting confirmation. So onto more important things - the handset itself.

The i7500 certainly doesn't offer anything new or groundbreaking, but it does everything competently and with no shortage of style. As you might expect, the i7500 is a touchscreen phone (specifically a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen) with that Android OS for all the Google-friendly functionality you can handle, throwing in access to the never-ending list of apps for easy download. That' s no different to the G1 and Magic, so why go Samsung? Perhaps because of the nice little finishing touches on offer from the Korean giant.

Aside from that super-bright screen, the Korean giant also throws in a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and video recording for some equally bright snaps and mini movies, as well as a GPS receiver, 8GB of internal memory (which you can boost via card for a further 32GB), high-speed HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and an audio/video player that's good for all mainstream formats. A long battery life too says Samsung, but doesn't actually say how long. We would guess it depends on how much media you stream over a day.

Samsung 'officially' says that the slimline i7500 will hit all major European markets in June, but with that exclusivity deal with O2 already announced in Germany, we wouldn't be surprised to see pre-orders from that particular network in the UK in weeks. We'll let you know as soon as anything is confirmed.
