Impulse launches world's cheapest Windows XP based laptop

If I tell you that a Windows XP mini-laptop with decent specification is available for less than $200 would you believe me? For the skepticals among you, better check out Impulse' website. The Chinese company, which recently came into limelight thanks to its $130 "world's cheapest laptop", has now released an updated version (TNX-9500) with much better specification. The main difference between the earlier one and the new one is processing capability -- while the Linux based NPX-9000 relied on good-for-nothing Marvel X-Scale 400MHz CPU, the Windows XP based TNX-9500 makes use of more powerful 1GHz VIA processor. Specification:

  • 1GHz VIA processor
  • 512MB SDRAM
  • max 16GB flash storage
  • 7" digital TFT screen
  • Built-in stereo speakers
  • 802.11g wireless
  • 3x usb 2.0 ports
  • SD card reader
  • 80 key keyboard + touchpad mouse
  • Windows XP operating system
  • The Windows XP version is not on sale yet, but the firm said it'll retail for less than $200.

There's another interesting development regarding this. Impulse is planning to launch a Windows Vista based version too. The Vista notebook will be powered by 1.6GHz Intel processor and will sport up to 2GB SDRAM, 80gig hard drive and same other specs. No word on pricing on Vista model, but the firm assured that it is also going to be low cost.
